Bridgetown

Bridgetown is the capital and largest city of Barbados. The city has a population of 96,578 as of 2006 - over a third of the total population of Barbados.

The city was originally established as "James Town" by the British in 1628. When the British arrived in Barbados, the islands were uninhabited and there was little trace of the previous indigenous peope, however one of the few items that the natives had left behind was a wooden bridge which came to be known as "Indian Bridge", and it is from this Indian Bridge that the town's name probably derives.
